Things Behind The Stars

Paris-based company Pulsar Content has boarded sales on French director Edouard Salier’s near-future sci-fi drama Things Behind The Stars ahead of the EFM.

Set in France in 2041, it revolves around two twin brothers who are training to be astronauts.

Their relationship takes on another dimension when one of them is contaminated with a mysterious residue that disfigures him, weakens his mind and makes him fluorescent at night.

Louis Peres, seen recently as the protagonist Etienne Lantier in France Televisions’ high-end serialised adaptation of Emile Zola’s Germinal, and Pablo Cobo co-star as the brothers. Spanish actress Marta Nieto, best known internationally for her role in the 2017 lost son drama Mother, also features in the cast.

Salier opted to shoot the feature, which is currently in post-production, on 16mm film.

Producers Jean-Michel Rey and Ninon Chapuis at Paris-based Rezo Production said this approach was one of the strengths of the film.

”We sincerely trust that the audience will appreciate as we do the strength of Things Behind The Stars, which was for us a huge challenge of cinema, between the choice of shooting on film (16mm), the special effects, realism, and fantasy,” they said.

It marks Salier’s debut feature after a number of award-winning shorts, including Habana and Flesh, which played in Sundance and Venice, and music videos for the likes of Massive Attack.

Most recently, Salier directed episodes of a number of buzzy French TV shows including Mortel and The Revolution for Netflix and Voltaire High for Amazon.
