S.S. Rajamouli’s period epic RRR has joined the “INR10 billion club” as the Indian blockbuster continues to grow its takings at the global box office.
Since opening on March 25, the action-adventure film starring Ram Charan and NTR Jr has taken more than $132m worldwide, according to producer DVV Entertainment, and now ranks as the third on the list of India’s biggest hits at the box office. It is only behind Nitesh Tiwari’s Dangal, which grossed $311m when released in December 2016, and Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which took $278m in 2017.
Set in the 1920s, the historical fiction feature imagines that freedom fighters Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem met and became best friends, working together to take on the occupying colonial British.
The film was the leading title at the global box office on its opening weekend, taking $65m, and has continued to perform strongly.
However, it will face competition in the coming days, with two major releases set to open across April 13-14, which marks New Year’s Day for a number of Indian communities. Prashanth Neel’s Kannada-language action thriller KGF: Chapter 2 and Nelson’s Tamil-language action film Beast will both receive high-profile releases.
