Rust, the ill-fated western that closed down late last year following the on-set death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, is to resume production in January 2023.
After the Hutchins family filed a wrongful death suit in February the estate has reached a settlement with the film’s producers and Alec Baldwin.
The star and producer discharged a prop gun that he had been told was “cold” during a rehearsal on October 21, 2021. Hutchins was struck and the 42-year-old cinematographer died later that day.
Hutchins’s husband Matthew Hutchins issued a statement on Wednesday (October 5) that read: “We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of ‘Rust,’ including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC. As part of that settlement, our case will be dismissed.”
Hutchins will now serve as executive producer on the production and said director Joel Souza and the original cast will return. Production took place at Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe in New Mexico.
Writing on Instagram Baldwin said, “We are pleased to announce today the settlement of the civil case filed on behalf of the family of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Throughout this difficult process everyone has maintained the specific desire to do what is best for Halyna’s son We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the resolution of this tragic and painful situation.”
At time of writing the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office had not presented its report to New Mexico prosecutors.
