‘Saint Omer’

The Geneva International Film Festival (GIFF, November 4-13) has unveiled the line-up for its 28th edition, as well as an honorary award for Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn.

The Swiss festival’s international competition includes Alice Diop’s Saint Omer which previously picked up the Silver Lion jury prize at Venice and is France’s Oscar submission for best international feature.

Also competing for the Reflet d’Or award for best film, worth CHF10,000  ($9,990), is Japanese animation Inu-oh from Masaaki Yuasa. The Japan-China co-production premiered in Venice’s Horizons strand before screening as a special presentation at Toronto.

Further competition titles include Cristina Grosan’s Ordinary Failures, which picked up the best director award (Authors under 40) at Venice’s Giornte degli Autori (GdA), and Shin Su-won’s Hommage.

Presiding over the jury is Iranian director Mani Haghighi whose film Subtraction is also screening at GIFF.

Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn will be honoured with the Geneva Award ahead of the Swiss premiere of his new Netflix series Copenhagen Cowboy.

Also receiving an honour is filmmaker and actor Alexandre Astier with The Film & Beyond award.

The festival will open with the Swiss premiere of Lars von Trier’s series The Kingdom Exodus and close with Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale.

Films screening out of competition include Phyllis Nagy’s Call Jane;, .Sophie Hyde’s Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, Marie Kreutzer’s Corsage  and  Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Broker.

In the international series competition, Chris Lang’s The Man, His Wife And The Canoe and the international premiere of the Swedish-Norwegian series Headhunters are among the highlights.

Digital Film Market 

Celebrating its 10th edition is Geneva’s Digital Market which will take place as a hybrid event, for the second year running. Running from November 7-11, execs from international companies including Banijay, Tribeca Festival, Spotify, Cascade 8 and France Télévisions, will participate in talks and events on topics including filmmaking in the metaverse, cryptocurrency, sustainability, XR and creating original content.
