Screen Scotland, the national body that drives the development of the Scottish film and TV industry, has named Cheryl Conway as its incoming head of Screen Commission, taking over from Brodie Pringle.
Conway’s job title at present is manager, production attraction at Screen NSW in Sydney, Australia, a role she has had since 2017. Prior to this, she worked in the US within the studio, network and independent sectors, for companies including Paramount Pictures, Discovery, Endemol Entertainment, Fox, NBC and Warner Bros.
She will be relocating to Edinburgh for the role from January.
Pringle is returning to work in locations and production.
Conway will focus on developing and promoting Scotland’s offer to international and local productions of scale.
Scotland has experienced a boom in inward investment in recent years. In 2021, in Glasgow alone, a record £42.4m was generated for the local economy off the back of film and TV productions shooting across the city. Productions to have filmed in Glasgow include The Flash and the fifth Indiana Jones.
“Scotland is renowned for its extraordinary beauty and magnificent locations, but it is also ambitious, confident, and importantly, has what it takes to excel in a highly competitive global market. These characteristics resonate strongly with me,” said Conway.
Isabel Davis, executive director at Screen Scotland, added: “Scotland is home to a greater volume and scale of productions than ever, thanks to strong local production and the global demand for high end content. The expansion of Scotland-based studios and increased investment in craft and technical skills is helping to meet this new demand, and Cheryl’s appointment means we are able to sustain and build momentum, and to promote our rapidly developing offer to global production clients
“Cheryl’s knowledge and practical experience was outstanding, and we couldn’t be happier that she’s agreed to move halfway across the world to join us in building Scotland’s success story.”
