Signature Entertainment has acquired UK-Ireland distribution rights to LOLA, a Second World War sci-fi feature from writer-director Andrew Legge and writer Angeli Macfarlane.
Having acquired the film from sales agent Bankside Films, Signature is planning a theatrical release for 2023. It will work with Robert McCann Finn and Nell Roddy of distributor Break Out Pictures on the Irish release.
LOLA debuted out of competition at Locarno Film Festival in August. Set in the UK during the Second World War, the film follows two sisters, played by Stefanie Martini and Emma Appleton, who build a machine that intercepts radio transmissions from the future.
It is produced by Alan Maher and John Wallace of Ireland’s Cowtown Pictures, in association with co-producers Alice Lusher and Catryn Ramasut of Cardiff-based ie ie productions.
It is Legge’s feature debut; he previously made shorts including The Girl With The Mechanical Maiden and The Chronoscope.
Elizabeth Williams, director of acquisitions and development at Signature, described the “ingenious” film as “a truly original and thought-provoking debut, filled with stunning cinematography, excellent performances and a brilliant soundtrack.”
Signature Entertainment’s upcoming slate includes Nicolas Cage thriller The Retirement Plan, Brian Epstein biopic Midas Man and John Cena action movie Freelance.
