Sky is beefing up its IPTV service Sky Go to allow subscribers to download shows from Sky 1 and Sky Atlantic to view offline without internet access.
The service, dubbed Sky Go Extra, will allow Sky customers to download shows to laptops, tablets and mobile devices, rather than having to rely on an internet connection to stream content as is currently required.
Charged at £5 per month, Sky Go Extra will also allow subscribers to view content on four registered devices, rather than the two devices Sky Go customers are limited to.
The move marks the latest upgrade to Sky Go, which launched in July 2011 and offers Sky customers free access to live and on-demand content from 43 channels. Sky Go now has more than 3m users each quarter.
Stephen van Rooyen, managing director of sales and marketing at Sky, said: “Building on the ever-growing popularity of Sky Go, Sky Go Extra lets Sky customers download great movies and TV shows to take with them to watch offline whenever and wherever suits them, as well as access to Sky Go on up to four internet-connected devices.”
The move follows similar moves to enable offline viewing by the BBC and Channel 4 via their iPlayer and 4oD apps.
