Steve McQueen’s Small Axe and Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You were the big winners at the Bafta Craft Awards, taking home eight of the 21 awards between them.
Small Axe, the BBC1 drama anthology about the lives of West Indian immigrants in 1960s, 70s and 80s London, claimed five gongs including: JoJo Williams for make-up & hair design; Jacqueline Durran for costume design; Helen Scott for production design; Shabier Kirchner for photography & lighting: fiction and Gary Davy for scripted casting.
Coel’s BBC1/HBO true-life inspired dramedy about a female author rebuilding her life after a sexual assault won three awards, including the writing: drama category for Coel and director: fiction for Coel and Sam Miller. I May Destroy You’s editing team won the editing: fiction award.
BBC programming accounted for 16 of the winners, with His Dark Materials receiving two awards in sound: fiction and special, visual & graphic effects categories. Sky and Netflix shows took home two awards apiece, while ITV claimed one.
The ceremony, broadcast on Bafta’s YouTube and Facebook channels, was hosted by Famalam star Gbemisola Ikumelo, co-written by Ikumelo and Akemnji Ndifornyen, and featured guest presenters including Annie Wallace, Ellen Thomas, Nathaniel Martello-White, Tony Robinson, Max Harwood and Mawaan Rizwan.
