Argentina’s Sombracine and Spain’s Mr. Miyagi are teaming witht with UK sales outfit Wildstar International for Berlinale and San Sebastian prize-winner Marco Berger’s 10th project, The Astronaut Lovers.
The Astronaut Lovers is about a man who travels from Spain to Argentina for a vacation at his family home, where he becomes attracted to a childhood friend. But their relationship is full of misunderstandings as they try to hide it from family and friends.
“This film is a mood change in regard to my previous works. It’s lighter and closer to comedy,” Berger told Screen. ”I believe The Astronaut Lovers stands for everything I would want to show in my cinema, and about my cinema.”
Argentinian director Berger’s credits include Butterfly in 2015 and Absent, which won the Teddy award at the Berlinale in 2011. His most recent film, Horseplay, made its world premire at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival this year.
The Astronaut Lovers is being produced by Alberto Masliah at Sombracine and David Matamoros and Ángeles Hernández at Mr Miyagi, with filming set to begin October 20.
Wildstar has worked with Berger on his previous four films. Sombracine’s previous credits include Berger’s 2020 film Young Hunter. Barcelona- based Mr. Miyagi co-produced Netflix hit The Platform and is in post-production on The Lighthouse, directed by company partner Ángeles Hernández. Mr. Miyagi’s founder David Matamoros previously ran Zentropa Spain.
“It’s a great script and we are sure this film will also be a great success,” said Wildstar founder Murray Dibbs.
