Joshua Michael Stern’s Steve Jobs biopic, Alex Gibney’s Wikileaks documentary and Stoker, the English-language debut of Park Chan-Wook, are among a dynamic Sundance Premieres and Documentary Premieres line-up.

Festival top brass unveiled the selections on Monday [Dec 3] in what, on paper at least, appears to be the most tantalising roster at Park City in many a year.

Closing Night Film jOBS, starring Ashton Kutcher as the Apple entrepreneur, is one of three biographical treatments of controversial characters in Premieres.

The other two are Michael Winterbottom’s study of adult magazine publisher Paul Raymond in The Look Of Love starring Steve Coogan; and Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Lovelace, starring Amanda Seyfried as the iconic porn star Linda Lovelace.

Among other anticipated world premieres, Richard Linklater closes his Ethan Hawke-Julie Delpy romantic trilogy with Before Midnight; Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes his feature directorial debut on Don John’s Addiction; and Shia LaBeouf goes looking for trouble in action caper The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman.

Documentary

Alex Gibney’s We Steal Secrets: The Story Of Wikileaks takes its place among a powerhouse Documentary Premieres line-up that includes Lucy Walker’s Salt Lake City Gala screening of the snowboarding tale The Crash Reel; RJ Cutler and Greg Finton’s The World According To Dick Cheney; and Sound City from Dave Grohl of Nirvana and Foo Fighters fame.

“Last year we noticed Premieres looked similar to the US Dramatic Competition,” said director of programming Trevor Groth.

“Everything was for sale and there were a lot of first-time directors apart from Spike Lee and Stephen Frears.

“This year we set out to try to programme films with a little more high power directors but without sacrificing quality, so we’ve got the likes of Jane Campion, Richard Linklater and Park Chan Wook.”

All films are world premieres unless otherwise states. The festival provided all synopses used below.
