Switzerland has selected Venice award-winner Who Is Still Alive as its submission for international feature at the 2027 Oscars.
Directed by Nicolas Wadimoff, the Arabic-language documentary follows a group of nine Gaza residents who map out their neighborhood in chalk to share stories of their lives before and after the Israel-Gaza war.
Who Is Still Alive had its world premiere in the Giornate degli Autori section of the Venice Film Festival last year, where it won the Cinema & Arts award.
Wadimoff, Philippe Coeytaux and Ketsia Stocker of Geneva-based Akka Films produced the film. First Hand Films is releasing Who Is Still Alive in Switzerland with US distribution handled by Watermelon Pictures.
“Representing Switzerland at the Oscars with our film is a great honour that fills us with joy,” Wadimoff said.
“It is also an opportunity to loudly and clearly champion the values that have made Switzerland what it should continue to be: a country of humanism and humanity, of dialogue and of respect for others. We will do our best to live up to this selection.”
The feature marks the 53rd submission for Switzerland since its category debut in 1961. The country has received five nominations, four shortlists and has won the award twice for Richard Dembo’s Dangerous Moves in 1984 and Xavier Koller’s Journey Of Hope in 1990.
