Taiwanese director Lou Yi-An’s Goddamned Asura has been sold to North America, Japan and Indonesia by Taipei-based Hope Marketing Entertainment.
The film, which was Taiwan’s submission for this year’s Oscars, is heading to North America in an exclusive deal with Cinedigm. It will be released on Cinedigm’s own streaming channel, AsianCrush, in the second half of 2023 and will open to broader third-party outlets afterwards.
The package deal with the Los Angeles-based company also covers previous Lou films White Lies, Black Lies, The Losers and A Place Of One’s Own.
“At AsianCrush, we want to showcase the hidden gems of Asian cinema that Western audiences would ordinarily never have the chance to see,” said Katie Cannon, AsianCrush channel director, of the acquisition.
In addition, Rights Cube has taken all Japanese rights to Goddamned Asura and will release it theatrically on June 9, while Falcon Pictures has acquired the package of four films for its streaming platform Klik Film in Indonesia.
The feature was released in Hong Kong through Creative Media Network last October.
The story explores the tragedy of random acts of killing, through six characters whose lives become intertwined when a shooting occurs in a crowded night market. Wang Yu-Xuan was named best supporting actress at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards and the Taipei Film Festival for her performance in the film.
It is nominated for best Asian Chinese language film at the at the upcoming Hong Kong Film Awards.
