Amazon Studios’ hot air balloon adventure The Aeronauts starring Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones soared at the EFM last month where the company locked pre-sales across most of the world.
FilmNation, Amazon Studios’ frequently used international sales agent, negotiated a raft of territories after introducing the project to Berlin buyers with deals already in place with eOne for the UK and Canada, and TMG for Germany.
The Aeronauts has pre-sold to: Italy (Lucky Red), Middle East (SR&Co), Portugal (Nos Lusomundo), South Korea (The Coup Corp.), Taiwan (MovieCloud), Hong Kong (Bravos), Singapore (Shaw Renters), Turkey (The Moments), Switzerland (Elite), Hungary (Cinetel), former Yugoslavia (Cinemania), Israel (Lev), and Greece (Seven).
As reported exclusively on Screen, The Aeronauts will open through Amazon Studios’ first four output deals in Australia/New Zealand (Transmission), Scandinavia (Scanbox), Japan (Gaga), and Spain and Latin America (Telefilms).
Amazon Studios is lining up a July UK shoot, with Tom Harper (Peaky Blinders) set to direct from a screenplay by Jack Thorne about a scientist who partners with a wealthy widow on an expedition to fly higher than anyone has gone before. Harper is also producing with Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman, the team behind global smash Beauty And The Beast whose latest hit Wonder has grossed more than $294m worldwide.
Amazon Studios financed The Aeronauts and will self-distribute in the US.
FilmNation has sold international rights on Amazon Studios titles since 2016, handling the likes of The Big Sick, Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria remake, Todd Haynes’ Wonderstruck, and Doug Liman’s The Wall.
