Doha Film Institute’s (DFI) year round film series will launch a programme of monthly public screenings at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in celebration of Qatar-UK 2013.
In partnership with the British Council and Qatar Museums Authority, the DFI UK Cinema Showcase at the MIA Auditorium will begin on Feb 28 with the Qatar premiere of 1948 British classic The Red Shoes.
The Academy Award winner, directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, is a classic tale of a young ballerina torn between art and romance.
Running until Fall 2013, the series will also show Danny Boyle’s Shallow Grave (1994), Ken Loach’s Kes (1969) and David Lean’s The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957).
“In addition, this reciprocal initiative will see films from the Arab world and Qatar screened in the UK, providing new insights into regional filmmaking for UK audiences. We look forward to working with DFI and to promoting mutual awareness between our two nations,” said Martin Hope, director of the British Council.
Last year’s program Qatar-Japan 2012 showcased Japan’s diverse cinematic traditions and celebrated over 40 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
