Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner The Square has been selected as Sweden’s official foreign-language Oscar entry for awards season.
The art world satire won the top prize in Cannes and is set to receive its North American premiere as a Special Presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival next month. Magnolia pre-bought US rights in September 2016 and plans a New York and Los Angeles release on October 27 ahead of a national roll-out.
Claes Bang, Elisabeth Moss, Dominic West and Terry Notary star in the tale of an art museum chief curator whose plans to promote an exhibit spiral out of control.
Östlund’s films have represented Sweden twice before in the Oscar race and the director said he “hopes it’s less painful this time around” after Force Majeure missed out on an Academy Award nomination in 2014. Involuntary was the official submission in 2009.
The Square will also screen at the 2017 New York Film Festival.
