TIFF hierarchy has unveiled the 2022 festival’s awards categories, which will be announced on September 18 at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
As always the festival will present its People’s Choice Award, now in its 45th year. The award is a strong Oscar best picture bellwether and is voted on by TIFF audience members online. All features in official selection are eligible for the Award.
Audience members also vote on the People’s Choice Documentary Award and the People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award.
Canada Goose will present the Amplify Voices Awards to what are adjudged to be the three best features by underrepresented filmmakers. Feature films in official selection by BIPOC and Canadian filmmakers are eligible and the winners will each receive a cash prize of $10,000 CAD (approximately $7,680 USD).
The Shawn Mendes Foundation Changemaker Award presented by the Shawn Mendes Foundation goes to a festival film that “tackles issues of social change” and comes with a $10,000 CAD cash prize (approximately $7,680 USD).
The winning film in this category will be selected by TIFF’s next wave committee comprising young film lovers who recognise cinema’s power to transform the world. The Shawn Mendes Foundation will also be making an annual contribution in support of TIFF Next Wave, helping TIFF deliver key initiatives to elevate young voices.
The 2022 IMDbPro Short Cuts Awards will go to best film, best Canadian film, and the Share Her Journey Award for best film by a woman. Each winning film will receive a bursary of $10,000 CAD (approximately $7,680 USD) and a one-year membership to IMDbPro.
“Awards are a part of the film industry’s ecosystem, and TIFF’s annual awards are committed to celebrating creativity, originality, and authentic voices and stories,” said Cameron Bailey, TIFF CEO. “Year over year we come together to celebrate all voices in film, and this year will be no different.” TIFF runs September 8-18.
