Six of the 19 international titles hail from North America, with 12 from Europe and one from Japan. Nine of the 19 directors are women.
Alongside Cow on the documentary longlist is Mark Cousins’ The Story Of Looking, which debuted in Telluride last month. Also selected are Peter Middleton and James Spinney’s The Real Charlie Chaplin, Mo Scarpelli’s El Father Plays Himself, and Finding Jack Charlton, the sports documentary about the late English football player and manager directed by Pete Thomas and broadcaster Gabriel Clarke.
10 of the 14 documentaries are directed or co-directed by women and non-binary filmmakers.
The five nominations in each category will be announced as part of the full nominations on Wednesday, November 3; with winners revealed at the ceremony on Sunday, December 5.
