Fresh off awards season where Tár earned plaudits, awards, and Oscar nominations, Todd Field has suggested the Cate Blanchett starrer could well be the last film he ever directs.
Asked in an interview with Cinema Scope if there might be another film after Tár Field replied, “I don’t think so.” When the interviewer asked if that might really be his last film he added: “I didn’t think about it until just now. It’s highly likely.”
When pressed on whether his view might change over time, Field said, “I suppose that’s possible. I hope it’s possible.”
Field has made no secret of the fact that he found it challenging to make Tár, in which Blanchett portrays a troubled orchestra conductor whose difficult past catches up with her.
Talking to Screen in December he said he had no projects planned, adding: “In my heart of hearts, I’d love to make a western. I don’t know if that will ever happen.”
The filmmaker is known for taking his time and over the span of 21 years has made three films in his feature directing career, besides shorts and rare forays into television. Little Children came out in 2006 and his debut In The Bedroom was released five years prior.
A number of projects have inevitably fallen through, including a series adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian as well as Purity, an adaptation for Showtime of Jonathan Franzen’s 2015 novel of the same name which was to star Daniel Craig before it fell apart. Field described the collapse of the project to Screen as “probably my largest professional regret”.
