Tom Cruise is set to return to the Cannes Film Festival (May 17-28) exactly 30 years after his last visit where an “exceptional tribute” will be paid to his career.
The US actor and producer will take part in an on-stage conversation with journalist Didier Allouch on May 18 before the world premiere of Paramount Pictures’ Top Gun: Maverick, will play as a special screening.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick will then be released in France on May 25 and the US on May 27.
Cruise made his only appearance at the festival in 1992 to attend the screening of Ron Howard’s Far And Away, which closed the 45th edition of Cannes. He also presented the Palme d’Or to director Bille August for The Best Intentions that year.
Cruise’s 40-year career has included the Mission: Impossible franchise, Rain Man and Eyes Wide Shut as well as Oscar nominations for his performances in Magnolia, Jerry Maguire and Born On The Fourth Of July.
The seventh instalment of the Mission: Impossible series is set for release in 2023 following production delays due to the pandemic.
Cannes is set to return as a fully-fledged physical festival next month after hosting a reduced version last year and being forced to cancel the 2020 edition due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The full line-up of the 75th edition will be announced on April 14, with the jury president yet to be revealed.
