The deadline for UK companies to publicly disclose pay gaps between male and female workers is passing today (April 4), with all organisations employing more than 250 people required by the government to publish their figures.

More than 1,200 companies have published numbers in the past 24 hours through the government’s online service (more than the combined total from the service’s previous 326 days in operation) as the midnight deadline looms.

Companies disclosing today include the UK arms of major film studios Warner Bros and Sony.

Columbia Pictures, which runs Sony’s UK film and TV operations, unveiled a gap of 23.5% in favour of male employees. Warner Bros Entertainment UK revealed that men earn 30.9% more on average.

Those figures are mean hourly rates, measuring the average difference between a woman’s hourly wage and a man’s hourly wage across the entire company.

Disney previously revealed a gender pay gap of 22% in favour of men, while Universal owner NBCUniversal disclosed a gap of 3.2%, also in favour of men.

In the exhibition field, Odeon Cinemas reported the largest pay gap with 12.5% in favour of men, while Vue Entertainment reported that women’s pay was 4% higher than men’s.

Cineworld Cinemas’ pay gap was 7.8% lower for women, Everyman Media reported a 6.3% gap lower for women, United Cinemas International (part of the Odeon group) reported a gap of 8.1% lower for women, while Picturehouse Cinemas had a 2.7% gap lower for women.  

In the public sphere, The British Film Institute disclosed a gender pay gap of 0.5% in favour of men, while bonus pay was 21.4% lower for women than men.

Last week, the BBC reported a gender pay gap of 10.7% and Channel 4 reported a gap of 28.6%, both in favour of men.

The UK nationwide average gender pay gap is 18% in favour of men.
