IFC Midnight has snapped up North America rights to Burial, a post-war thriller from UK writer/director Ben Parker, in a deal with Altitude Film Sales.
The film, which recently wrapped shooting on location in Estonia, has also been picked up for Portugal (Nos), Baltics (Latvian Theatrical Distribution), Indonesia (PT Prima), South Korea (Noori), Vietnam (Media Film International) and the Middle East (Phars).
UK-based Altitude will be selling the thriller at the upcoming Cannes virtual market and has released this first-look image of lead actress Charlotte Vega in the film. The cast also includes Tom Felton, Harriet Walter, Barry Ward, Bill Milner, Dan Skinner, Niall Murphy and David Alexander.
Vega replaces Niamh Algar, the Irish star of Calm With Horses and Raised By Wolves, who was previously attached when the film was introduced at last year’s Cannes virtual market.
It marks the second feature for Parker, whose UK horror The Chamber was nominated for a Bafta Cymru Award in 2017 and released by Studiocanal.
Burial is set during the last days of the Second World War and follows a small band of Russian soldiers, led by intelligence officer Brana Vasilyeva (Vega), who is tasked with trafficking the remains of Hitler back to Stalin in Russia. En route, the unit is attacked by German ‘werewolf’ partisans and picked off one-by-one.
The production shot on location near the Estonian capital of Tallinn, where dense forests and abandoned buildings were used to create a post-war setting.
Producer is Matthew James Wilkinson, whose credits include Yesterday and Muscle, for Stigma Films. Finance was provided by Head Gear Films, Altitude Media Group and Ffilm Cymru Wales alongside equity partners Ali Cook, MBK IP and Fields Parks. Also producing is Paul Higgins for Fields Park and Ivo Felt of Estonia’s Allfilm. Executive producer is Hugh Spearing. Film Estonia is the cash rebate provider.
