‘Uncut Gems’

Uncut Gems and The Lighthouse have emerged as the top contenders for this year’s Film Independent Spirit Awards with five nods apiece while A24 leads the distributor pack on 18 nominations.

Adam Sandler from Uncut Gems will face off against The Lighthouse’s Robert Pattinson and others for best lead male and the Safdie brothers and Robert Eggers are among the best director nominees for each film, respectively.

Other best feature nominees announced on Thursday (21) are A Hidden Life, Clemency, The Farewell and Marriage Story. 

Features that earned multiple citations included Give Me Liberty and Honey Boy with four each, and Clemency, Hustlers, The Last Black Man In San Francisco, Luce, Marriage Story and The Third Wife on three each. 

The nominees for best international film were Brazil’s Invisible Life, South Korea’s Parasite, France’s Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, Peru’s Retablo, and the UK’s The Souvenir. 

Among distributors, Neon films garnered 10 nods and Amazon Studios eight. 

Spirit Awards winners, selected by Film Independent members, will be announced at the organisation’s awards ceremony on February 8 2020 in Santa Monica.
