Vertical Entertainment has acquired out of AFM worldwide rights to sci-fi adventure War Of The Worlds: The Attack and plans a 2023 theatrical release.
The story follows three young astronomers tracking a meteorite that crashes into earth who discover they are at the epicentre of a Martian invasion. A soldier helps the trio and they end up in London where they must find a way to save mankind. The project is in post-production.
Junaid Syed makes his feature directorial debut and the cast includes Sam Gittins, Vincent Regan, Alhaji Fofana, Lara Lemon and Leo Staar. Syed co-wrote the screenplay with Tom Jolliffe and is producing alongside Hayley Medwell and Jatinder Kumar Bhardwaj.
“The idea was to create a modernised version of H.G Wells’ War Of The Worlds while honouring and trying to stay as close to the original story as possible. It has nostalgic elements for the grown-ups and, at the same time, fresh storylines making it relatable for the younger audiences,” said Syed.
“We are excited to be working with Vertical on the Worldwide release of the film. The film showcases the amazing talent of our cast and crew, whose vision and skill created a film that’s a true testament to the beloved classic story,” added Medwell.
Vertical’s SVP of acquisitions Tony Piantedosi negotiated the deal with Medwell and Syed on behalf of the production and said “We have a great track record with the thriller and sci-fi genres, so we are thrilled to have both in Junaid’s film which is a great, modern take on HG Wells’ classic. We feel audiences will eat it up when we release the film next year.”
