Vertigo Releasing has picked up UK and Ireland rights to The Assistant, the first narrative feature from Casting JonBenet director Kitty Green, from Protagonist Pictures.
The #MeToo-inspired drama, which stars Julia Garner (Ozark) and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), will be released in the UK and Ireland on April 3, 2020.
The film follows one day in the life of an aspiring film producer (Garner), who has landed her dream job as a junior assistant to a powerful entertainment mogul. As her first day goes on, she grows increasingly aware of the abuse taking place at the company. Macfadyen co-stars as an HR executive.
Producers are Green, Scott Macaulay, James Schamus, P. Jennifer Dana and Ross Jacobson of 3311 Productions.
The film premiered at last year’s Telluride and also played at Sundance. The filmmakers will donate 10% of the profits from the film to The New York Women’s Foundation, which gives grants to organisations that help women and families in the city.
Green’s previous films are documentaries Ukraine Is Not A Brothel, which premiered at Venice in 2013, and Sundance premiere Casting JonBenet, which was acquired by Netflix.
