Vertigo Releasing has acquired UK and Ireland distribution rights for Spanish rural thriller Piggy following its world premiere in Sundance’s Midnight section in January.

Paris-based Charades is handling international sales on the title.

“We fell in love with Piggy at Sundance,” said Ed Caffrey, head of acquisitions at Vertigo Releasing, which has previously acquired hot titles Revenge, Shorta and Bafta-nominated UK indie Boiling Point from Charades. Caffrey negotiated the deal with Jean-Félix Dealberto at Charades.

Other new deals for the feature include to Germany (Alamode), Switzerland (Praesens), Italy (I Wonder), Scandinavia and Baltics (Nonstop Entertainment) and Hungary (ADS Service).

As previously announced, Magnolia has taken US rights. Negotiations are ongoing with other territories including Latin America, Greece, Australia and New Zealand, Benelux and Korea.

Filmax pre-bought the film for Spain and is planning an October 2022 release.

Piggy is an intelligent movie, each character, each twist of the plot, each shot, each directorial choice manages to surprise for its originality, and the fast pace that constantly grows sticks to the screen,” said Andrea Romeo, head of Italy’s I Wonder.

Spanish TV veteran

Piggy is the fiction feature debut of Spanish TV drama veteran Carlota Pereda. It expands on her 2018 short of the same name about a teenager who is mercilessly bullied about her weight. Stuck in her family’s butcher shop, she has an unexpected chance to take revenge on her bullies.

Laura Galán, who won multiple awards for her performance in the original short, returns to the role with other cast members including Carmen Machi, Claudia Salas and Pilar Castro.

The film is produced by Morena Films in co-production with France’s Backup Studio. Morena producer Merry Colomer lead produced, with managing director Pilar Benito on board as executive producer. Backup’s David Atlan-Jackson, Jean-Baptiste Babin and Joel Thibout have co-producer credits.
