UK-based Vertigo Releasing has acquired North American rights to Aleem Khan’s Bafta-winning After Love and will release the film via a distribution partner in cinemas across North America from summer 2022.
The distributor has previously handled the streaming-led North American releases of films including Sam Kelly’s Savage and Thomas Clay’s Fanny Lye Deliver’d. It is also releasing Saeed Roustaee’s Iranian thriller Just 6.5 in North America on approximately 15 screens in July. After Love is expected to be a wider release still.
“We work with partners on our US releases, but we use a different team on each film depending on what the film/campaign needs,” said Ed Caffrey, Vertigo’s head of acquisitions and business development.
UK release
BFI Distribution handled the UK-Ireland release for After Love in June 2021, taking just shy of £20,000 from 51 locations on opening weekend, and reaching a total gross of £133,000.
After Love stars Joanna Scanlan as a lady suddenly widowed. The day after her late husband’s burial, she discovers he has a secret just 21 miles across the English Channel in Calais.
Scanlan won the best actress award at last month’s Baftas for her performance; with the film also scooping six Bifas in December, including best British independent film and best director.
The BFI and BBC Film-backed film was awarded the Cannes 2020 Critics’ Week label and chosen as a Toronto Industry Selects title, before a UK premiere at London Film Festival that year.
It is produced by Matthieu de Braconier for the UK’s The Bureau, with The Bureau Sales selling the film internationally.
