Viennale unveils 2014 highlights

Highlights of the 52^nd Vienna International Film Festival (Oct 23-Nov 6) have been unveiled, including buzz titles from Cannes and Sundance as well as a tribute to actor Viggo Mortensen and a retrospective on director John Ford.

The feature film programme includes Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye to Language 3D, Olivier Assayas’s Clouds of Sils Maria and the Dardenne brothers’ Two Days, One Night. Other titles include Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash, Ruben Ostlund’s Turist and Lenny Abrahamson’s Frank.

In the documentary line-up, highlights include Nick Cave doc 20,000 Days On Earth, from directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard; Frederick Wiseman’s National Gallery; and Tessa Louise Salome’s Mr Leos Carax.

The Viennale will pay tribute to American-Danish actor Viggo Mortensen, whose films range from The Lord of the Rings trilogy to David Cronenberg features such as A History of Violence, and equally darks drama’s including The Road. Alongside around half a dozen of his films, the festival will premiere his most recent work, Jauja.

There will be a strand titled Revolutions in 16mm, comprising films shot on the small gauge film; the shorts and three feature films from Algerian filmmaker Tariq Teguia, including Roma wa la N’touma (2006), Gabbla (2008) and Zanj Revolution (2013); and a tribute to German director and video artist Harun Faroki, who died on July 30.

A comprehensive retrospective of US director John Ford will comprise nearly 50 films including How Green Was My Valley (1941), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and The Searchers (1956).

Peter Bogdanovich’s documentary, Directed By John Ford, will accompany the retrospective.
