Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has named Gillian Zhao as president of its operations in China as its post-merger restructure continues.
The media giant also appointed Tony Qiu as SVP head of commercial for Western Pacific. Both report to James Gibbons, WBD’s president and manging director for Western Pacific, and are effective immediately.
Zhao is an industry veteran who was named Warner’s EVP in China in 2016 and will now lead the strategic growth of WBD’s theatrical, TV distribution, home entertainment and local theatrical production businesses in China.
Qiu fills a newly created regional role. In addition to ad sales and games management in China, Qiu will also lead the consumer products business in China, Australia and New Zealand, driving the international ad sales for the region as a whole. He was named as part of Clement Schwebig’s executive lineup in WBD’s India, Southeast Asia and Korea group in June, with additional responsibility in China.
“Their leadership will be key as we look to further monetise and scale our businesses,” said Gibbons of the two appointments.
WBD defines the Western Pacific region as Japan, Australia, New Zealand and China, and spans WBD’s portfolio, including pay-TV, FTA, theatrical, studios, DTC and consumer products.
