Alexei Navalny, subject of Sundance 2022 selection ‘Navalny’

Against the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine war Warner Bros has acquired Daniel Roher’s documentary Navalny from its corporate stablemates and set a two-day theatrical release with Fathom next month.

The Sundance world premiere will play in more than 800 theatres in North America on April 11 and 12. The screenings will be followed by a conversation with the filmmakers moderated by CNN’s Clarissa Ward, who has reported from Russia and Ukraine for several years, specifically on matters related to Navalny.

The move suggests an awards run could be on the cards for the acclaimed film.

Navalny received its international premiere at the festival last weekend and explores the 2020 assassination attempt against jailed Russian dissident and presidential candidate Alexei Navalny. Despite denials from authorities in Moscow the poison was later linked to the Kremlin through investigations by news organisations. Last week the Kremlin sentenced Navalny to a further nine years after finding him guilty of fraud.

Navalny is presented by CNN Films and HBO Max. in association with Fishbowl Films, RaeFilm Studios, and Cottage M. The film won both the Sundance U.S. Documentary competition audience award and the Festival Favorite Award.

CNN Films retains linear broadcast rights for Navalny in North America. HBO Max and CNN+ hold streaming rights. Dogwoof represents available international rights for the film.
