Heading into this week’s virtual EFM Montreal-based WaZabi Films has licensed US rights to Cinedigm on Australian drama Moon Rock For Monday.
Wazabi co-president Anick Poirier said the company has struck additional deals on the Lunar Pictures feature with Landfilm for German-speaking Europe, Youngjin Creative for South Korea, STS for Japan, Encripta for Latin America, and Media4Fun for Poland.
Kurt Martin directed the story about Monday, a terminally ill girl who encounters a teenage fugitive with whom she ends up travelling to Australia’s Northern Territory to find the moon rock she believes will heal her. The cast includes Aaron Jeffery (The Flood, X Men Origins: Wolverine), George Pullar (Coyote, Playing For Keeps) and newcomer Ashlyn Louden-Gamble as Monday.
Jim Robison of Lunar Pictures produced the film which earned best feature, actor, producer and screenplay honours at the Australian Screen Industry Network Awards. It has played Ale Kino in Poland, Zurich Film Festival, Busan International Kids & Youth Film Festival in South Korea and Beijing International Film Festival.
Poirier negotiated the Cinedigm deal with manager of acquisitions Brandon Hill and said, “After a successful release in its home country of Australia, we are excited that this charming film will be shared in the US and beyond.” Pinnacle Films distributed Moon Rock For Monday in Australia and New Zealand.
Robison added, “We are delighted to partner with Wazabi who have done a fantastic job in bringing our film to the world, and with this new recent acquisition from Cinedigm who have a fantastic track record with distributing quality independent films.”
