Paris-based Wild Bunch International (WBI) has unveiled a raft of sales for Finnish director Hanna Bergholm’s horror drama Hatching, following its buzzy world premiere in Sundance’s Midnight section.
The debut feature stars newcomer Siiri Solalinna as a pressured, young gymnast who finds comfort in caring for a strange egg that then hatches into an unexpected nightmare.
Hatching has also just won the Grand Prize and youth jury prize at the Gérardmer International Fantastic Film Festival in France (January 26-30), where other winners included Kate Dolan’s You Are Not My Mother and Paco Plaza’s La Abuela.
European deals on Hatching include to France (The Jokers), Benelux (The Searchers), Switzerland (Praesens), Germany (Capelight Pictures), Spain (Vertigo), Italy (Adler), Portugal (Alambique), Hungary (ADS Service) and Czech Republic (Film Europe). Nordisk Film is gearing up for a release in Scandinavia, beginning March 4 in Finland, to be followed by Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
In Asia and Oceania, the film has sold to Australia (Rialto), Japan (Gaga) and Taiwan (Proview Entertainment) while JNC Global has taken rights for Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar and Singapore-based Purple Plan for Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei.
In the rest of the world, deals so far include to Turkey (Bir), the Middle East (Gulf Film) and Mexico (Canibal Networks). The sales team led by Eva Diederix expects to tie up further Asian and Latin American deals in the coming days.
As previously announced, it has also sold to IFC Midnight for North America while Picturehouse has taken UK and Ireland rights.
The feature is lead produced by Mika Ritalahti and Niko Ritalahti at Helsinki-based company Silva Mysterium.
