Will Smith and Jessica Chastain did their Oscar hopes a favour by winning top lead acting film honours at the 28th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica on Sunday night (Feb 27).
Smith earned plaudits for his lead role in Warner Bros’ King Richard as Richard Williams, the self-styled tennis coach to now legendary daughters Serena and Venus and is being regarded as the Oscar frontrunner by awards pundits, a little ahead of Benedict Cumberbatch for The Power Of The Dog.
Chastain bolsters her Academy Awards prospects awith a timely win for her role as televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in Searchlight Pictures’ The Eyes Of Tammy Faye.
In the supporting categories Oscar frontrunner Ariana DeBose won for her portrayal of Anita in 20th Century Studios’ West Side Story and Troy Kotsur, who is also at the head of the pack of Academy Award nominees, became the first deaf actor to win a SAG Award for his performance as Frank Rossi in Apple’s Coda, which also scooped the best film ensemble award on the night.
Coda’s ensemble win bodes well for its best picture Oscar chances although it is a tough category against nine other contenders and the SAG win is not a cast-iron guarantee of Academy Awards glory.
In the TV categories it was a big night for Netflix phenomenon Squid Game as both lead actors and the entire cast won awards.
