Nascent US sales outfit WME Independent has swooped on five genre features from Southeast Asia and Taiwan, and is launching pre-sales at the Marché.
The deals were brokered by WME’s Singapore-based agent Nelson Mok who is in talks with international buyers in Cannes.
The titles include Thai horror The Cursed Land, co-directed by Panu Aree and Kong Rithdee, which follows a widower who travels to Thailand’s deep south to seek help from a witch doctor. Producer is Nonzee Nimibutr, whose credits include Nang Nak.
Action feature Bad Blood marks the directorial debut of Vietnamese producer Dan Trong Tran (The Ancestral) and stars Kieu Minh Tuấn as a notorious henchman who returns to Saigon after a long absence.
Red Thread reunites Vietnam-US director Ham Tran with Maika producer Anderson Le and centres on a woman who creates a podcast with a 12-year-old girl to explore people’s experiences with ghosts.
Azizi Asadel from Indonesia-Japan idol group JKT48 stars in Tainted Soul as a girl with no memory who befriends a teenager who can see ghosts. It is directed by Indonesia’s Ginanti Rona Tembang Sari (Lukisan Ratu Kidul).
Finally, The Bridge Curse: Ritual reunites Taiwanese director Lester Hsi, producer Alain Hao, and actors JC Lin and Summer Meng from 2020’s The Bridge Curse. The sequel will follow a group of students who unleash a swarm of evil spirits.
WME Independent was formed in September 2021 when Deborah McIntosh and Alex Walton split from Endeavor Content to lead the new division of WME.
