EXCLUSIVE: Fast-rising global genre specialist XYZ Films has reported a strong response to its recent Berlin sales slate led by Brian Horiuchi’s ensemble sci-fi drama Parts Per Billion.
Rosario Dawson, Josh Hartnett, Teresa Palmer, Penn Badgley, Frank Langella and Gena Rowlands star in the film produced by Molly Hassell, Jennifer Levine and Michael Benaroya.
Deals have closed with Phase 4 Films for Canada, Village Roadshow for Australia/New Zealand, Nu Metro for South Africa, Karantania for the former Yugoslavia, Cinema Prestige for Russia, Falcon Films for the Middle East, Calinos for Turkey, Pictureworks for India, Fine Films for Japan and Ram Entertainment for Malaysia.
A US acquisition is understood to be pending. The film wrapped production in Detroit last year and tells of three couples dealing with the same reality-shaking event.
Horror-comedy musical Stage Fright, the imminent SXSW world premiere directed by Jerome Sable and starring Allie MacDonald and Douglas Smith with Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf, has gone to Metrodome for the UK and SND for France.
In further deals, Pretty Pictures will release in Russia, Sundream in Hong Kong and Village Roadshow in Australia/New Zealand. As reported previously, Magnet Releasing acquired US rights in Berlin.
XYZ Films has licensed a slew of territories on Toronto 2013 world premiere Proxy directed by Zack Parker and starring Alexia Rasmussen, Alexa Havins, Kristina Klebe and Joe Swanberg.
Parco picked up the film for Japan, Ascot Elite for Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland and Koch Media for the UK, Benelux and Scandinavia. IFC Midnight will release Proxy in the US.
The sales slate, overseen by XYZ Films partner Nate Bolotin (pictured), includes Sundance 2014 entries The Raid 2, which XYZ Films produced and SPC will release in the US on March 28, as well as Life After Beth, Killers and Dead Snow: Red Vs Dead, on which XYZ served as executive producers.
Also on the roster is Kevin Smith’s Tusk, which Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions picked up for the UK, Italy, Australia/New Zealand and Latin America and A24 will distribute in the US.
