Heading into the Sundance world premiere of Riley Stearns’ Dual on Saturday (22), XYZ Films has struck a first-look production deal with Toronto and Los Angeles-based producer Lee Kim’s Resolute Films and Entertainment.
The partners will produce several titles together each year with a particular focus on diverse filmmaker-driven films and international co-productions, particularly with Kim’s native Canada.
XYZ and Resolute most recently collaborated on U.S. Dramatic Competition selection Dual starring Karen Gillan, Aaron Paul, and Beulah Koale. The satirical sci-fi about a woman who must engage in a fight to the death with her clone shot entirely in Finland during the pandemic.
The parties also worked together on Matt Johnson’s Sundance 2016 premiere Operation Avalanche which was released by Lionsgate; Anthony Scott Burns’ supernatural thriller Our House released by IFC Films in 2018; and Jeff Chan’s 2019 Netflix sci-fi thriller Code 8.
“Lee has been a trusted producer to XYZ for many years,” said XYZ Films CEO Nick Spicer. “We will rely on his expertise and taste as we continue to expand our production slate.”
Kim added, “XYZ has become a true Hollywood success story through years of hard work, collaboration and loyalty to the filmmakers they work with. I’m excited to be working more closely with them and with the synergies we will create.”
As part of the deal, XYZ Films production and finance coordinator Sanjeev M is joining Resolute as creative executive.
