The film also pre-sold to Bir Film for Turkey and Catchplay for Taiwan.
Korea-based sales agent FineCut has pre-sold Kim Jee-woon’s upcoming thriller I Saw The Devil to Optimum Releasing for the UK.
Optimum Releasing picked up the film after viewing an eighteen minute promo during the Cannes Market. The UK-based distributor previously released Bong Joon-ho’s mutant thriller The Host and has recently distributed the creature feature Chaw, both Korean films sold by Finecut.
“Kim Jee-woon’s beautifully crafted footage crept into our subconscious like a dark force. We feel sure he will deliver one of the most exquisite, disquieting films for a long time. We look forward to working again with Youngjoo and her team; consistent providers of cutting-edge cinematic experiences,” said Berenice Fugard, head of acquisitions at Optimum Releasing.
The film also pre-sold to Bir Film for Turkey and Catchplay for Taiwan. Bir Film is the Turkish distributor for films such as Coco Chanel And Igor Stravinsky, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Kim’s previous horror film A Tale Of Two Sisters as well as Bong’s The Host.
Catchplay is the Taiwanese distributor for films such as The Code and The Bank Job.
Billed as a hard-boiled thriller, I Saw The Devil is about a psychopathic serial killer and a top secret agent whose fiancée has become one of his victims. The film follows the suffocating hide-and-seek revenge story between the two men played by Lee Byung-hun (G.I. Joe, A Bittersweet Life) and Choi Min-sik (Oldboy).
I Saw The Devil sold to ARP for French-speaking territories earlier this year.
Currently in production, the film is scheduled for release this summer, with its first teaser trailer available on-line.
