Vasili Sigarev’s directorial debut Volchok scooped The Grand Prize at Russia’s 20th Kinotavr Open Film Festival, which wrapped yesterday (June 14).

The festival, which ran from June 7, had 12 world premieres this year, all of which were in competition, and has increasingly become the leading Russia’s film festival. Its film market, which run June 10 - 15, now attracts more than 1000 buyers and distributors from across the world.

Sigarev’s Volchok, which was among the world premieres, is a family conflict drama set in a remote Russian province. It is based on Sigarev’s original play of the same name and also earned him the award for best screenplay. Meanwhile, Yana Troyanova won best actress for her debut role as the film’s troubled mother

Elsewhere, Boris Kamorzin picked up the Best Actor award for Tale In The Darkness, while Ivan Vyrypayev, whose drama Euphoria has collected numerous festival prizes in the past two years, won best director with his new film Oxygen. Best DOP went to Dmitri Yashonkov for Ya, a colourful romantic comedy from director Igor Voloshin

Producer Sergei Selyanov, who chaired the jury, said the decision to award Volchok as best film was a unanimous decision by the jury.
