Australian sales agency Odin’s Eye Entertainment (OEE) has picked up worldwide rights to documentary Pray For Japan, directed by filmmaker and manga publisher Stu Levy.
In addition, Bayview will distribute the film on DVD and Blu-ray in North America, while Levy is working with the community-based Tugg platform to screen the film in the United States. Tugg is a web platform that enables audiences to bring the movies they want to see to their local theatre.
The documentary focuses on four key perspectives of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan’s Tohoku region last year – school, shelter, family and volunteers. Each perspective presents victims who faced significant obstacles and fought to overcome them.
In keeping with the film’s not-for-profit mantra, all producer profits will be donated to Japan-based organisations working in the Tohoku region.
The film also recently had a theatrical run with AMC Theatres in North America and Cinemart in Japan.
“It’s exciting to initiate Phase 2 of the Pray For Japan distribution plan – and to do it in such an innovative way with these great partners,” said Levy. “The recovery in Tohoku will take years, and the rest of the world needs to pay attention so we can learn from the success and mistakes.”
