Goodbye Bafana producer Jean-Luc van Damme of Banana Films has revealed details of his new projects.
Van Damme is pushing ahead with a new $6 million biopic about legendary photographer Robert Capa [pictured].
The film, Capa In Israel, is to be directed by Eduardo Rossoff and scripted by Robert Butler. It is set in 1948, during the battle for independence in Israel. The aim is to shoot early next year.
Van Damme has secured rights to Capa’s photography, which will feature in the film. Banana Films has signed an exclusive contract with ICP (The International Center Of Photography in NewYork) which holds rights to Capa’s pictures.
Banana Films is also preparing an English language, Berlin set comedy called Schmuck. This is about an elderly New York Jew who comes to Berlin to make peace with his estranged daughter. A director is expected to be attached shortly.
Van Damme is still hoping to make his Salvador Dali project The Surrealist, which Philippe Mora is attached to direct and Arrow Entertainment is pre-selling.
Meanwhile, van Damme is also still involved in Julien Temple’s Marvin Gaye project. This film, about Gaye’s time late in his career in Ostend when he recorded his album Midnight Love (with its hit single Sexual Healing) is being put together as a Belgian-Luxembourg coproduction. Details of how the film will be financed and sold are expected to be announced shortly.
Here at the market, Film Sharks is selling van Damme’s latest feature Let Me Survive, directed by Eduardo Rossoff and starring Kierston Wareing, Craig Fairbrass and Isabella Blake-Thomas.
