Barcelona-based Evohe Films is to make 138 Seconds, a documentary feature about the controversial boxing champion Josep Girones, with Mexico’s Cacao Films.
Respected documentary film-maker Joan Llopez Lloret (Utopia 79, Los Hermanos Oligor) will direct the project, which is set to go into production next year.
Girones was several times European champion and a world title contender in the 1930s but he fled the Spanish dictatorship, leaving behind his wife and kids, when accused of being involved in torturing. He moved to Mexico for the rest of his life. Years later a Spanish amateur boxer with the same name confessed to being the torturer.
Evohe Films’ previous documentary A Certain Truth (2008), directed by Abel Garcia Roure, set in a mental hospital, proved hugely popular on the international festival circuit, particularly at Rotterdam.
