Sanford Panitch’s Fox International Productions (FIP) has acquired Latin American rights to Gustavo Loza’s Mexican film La Otra Familia (The Other Family).
The film tells of a gay couple who take charge of a seven-year-old boy after he is rescued from his crack-addicted mother. Fox plans to roll out the film in the first half of 2011.
Twentieth Century Fox De Mexico previously collaborated with the film’s producer Matthias Ehrenberg on La Hija Del Canibal, Vivir Mata, and Sexo Pudor Y Lagrimas. Ehrenberg produced alongside Ricardo Kleinbaum and negotiated the deal with FIP’s Tony Safford.
Loza also wrote the screenplay to La Otra Familia and his credits include Atletico San Pancho, Mexico’s 2007 Oscar submission Al Otro Lado, and Paradas Continuas.
“Gustavo Loza has constructed a powerful story tackling issues that have not been widely addressed in our culture,” Ehrenberg said. “We hope the film will provoke discussion, generate awareness to the issues and grip audiences with its human drama and deep emotions. We are very happy that Fox has embraced the movie so fully.”
“I’ve tried to make a socially bold and morally complex film in which the audience faces a dilemma about their love for a child and the necessity that many of those who have not been able to, can – and should – become parents, regardless of their economic status, political affiliation, religious beliefs or sexual orientation,” Loza added.
“Fox is proud to present another high quality Mexican film, La Otra Familia, in which Gustavo Loza presents a complex and controversial theme with great finesse and with a keen sense of humour,” Twentieth Century Fox De Mexico general manager Juan Carlos Lazo said.
