Riding high on the critical and commercial success of Creed, the young director will next helm Marvel’s superhero adaptation.
Black Panther is scheduled for US release on February 16 2018 via Disney with previously announced Chadwick Boseman in the lead.
The character is the king of the technologically advanced nation of Wakanda and will first appear in the May 6 release of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War.
“We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family,” said Marvel chief and Black Panther producer Kevin Feige. “The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct Black Panther.
Coogler rose to prominence with his 2013 debut Fruitvale Station starring Michael B Jordan, who went on to star in Creed.
Sylvester Stallone won the best supporting actor Golden Globe on Sunday for his performance in Creed.
