Fox Searchlight is scheduled to start principal photography in Hawaii today [March 15] on Alexander Payne’s The Descendants starring George Clooney (pictured), Judy Greer and Beau Bridges.
Clooney will play an indifferent husband and father of two who re-examines his life when his wife suffers a boating accident off Waikiki.
The event leads to a rapprochement with his young daughters and a decision to sell the family’s land handed down from Hawaiian royalty and missionaries.
Matthew Lillard, Robert Forster, Shailene Woodley, Mary Birdsong, Nick Krause and Amara Miller round out the key cast.
Nat Faxon and Jim Rash adapted the screenplay with Payne from the debut novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings. Ad Hominem’s Jim Burke, Payne and Jim Taylor are producing.
President of production Claudia Lewis and senior vice- president of production Matthew Greenfield are overseeing for Searchlight.
“I feel very lucky to have found this project.” Payne, whose last full-length feature as director was Sideways in 2004, said. “The characters, the story and the strong sense of place really spoke to me.”
“Ad Hominem has a knack for finding projects that are both idiosyncratic and true to human nature,” Searchlight presidents Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula said. “We’re looking forward to seeing their unique vision for this story come to life.”
