Tommy Lee Jones has been cast as US Army Colonel Chester Phillips in Marvel Studio’s Captain America: The First Avenger.

Jones joins Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan and Stanley Tucci on the project, scheduled for release on July 22, 2011, through Paramount.

In the early comics, Phillips recruited Steve Rogers to join Project Rebirth, the secret experiment that turned Rogers into the super soldier known as Captain America.

Joe Johnston will direct from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Marvel’ Kevin Feige will produce and Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel, Nigel Gostelow and Louis D’Esposito will serve as executive producers.

Jones’ will next be seen in The Company Men and he is represented by CAA and attorney Bill Jacobson.
