The Pusan Promotion Plan (PPP) co-production market has long been one of the main draws at Pusan. This year it is showcasing 30 projects from 17 countries (the Co-production PRO, launched last year, has been absorbed into PPP).
A slew of established Asian directors are producing projects featured in the PPP. Jia Zhang-ke is presenting A Long Afternoon Nap by Cinefondation director Chen Tao, Singapore's Eric Khoo is producing Sandcastle by Asian Film Academy alumnus Boo Jun Feng, and Korea's Lee Chang-dong is co-producing a French drama, A Brand New Waking Life (working title), to be directed by Ounie Leconte, as well as directing his own project Poetry.
Other highlights include Choi Dong-hoon's Jeon Woo Chi, produced by Eugene Lee, and the PPP's first animated project, Oh Sungyoon's Yipsak - A Chicken Wild, produced by Shim Jae-myung, whose credits include action hit JSA.
From beyond the region, UK director Simon Rumley is presenting a China-set thriller called Stranger, and Georgia's Rusudan Chkonia is showcasing the historical drama Devil's Rock.
PPP has seen 106 of its previous 10 years' projects completed, roughly 44%. From last year's selection, Hong Sang-soo's Night And Day was picked for the Berlinale competition and is in the Korean Panorama at Piff, and Pan Jianlin's Feast Of Villains was in competition at Locarno and is at Pusan in the Window On Asian Cinema section.
Projects from other recent years now at Piff include Samira Makhmalbaf's Two-Footed Horse which also played in competition at San Sebastian. Li Hongqi's Routine Holiday is in New Currents and Kim So-yong's Treeless Mountain is in the Korean Vision section.
