On the eve of the AFM, Protagonist Pictures has announced sales to key territories of Richard Ayoade’s coming-of-age comedy, Submarine.
Sales were concluded in advance of the AFM screenings with Australia and New Zealand (Madman), France (Mars), Benelux (Wild Bunch), Poland (Gutek), Switzerland (Rialto), Middle East (Front Row) and Turkey (Film Pop).
These are in addition to the sales to The Weinstein Company for North America and Non-Stop for Scandinavia, announced after the films’s buzzy Toronto premiere.
Head of Sales Charlotte Van Weede negotiated the deals in Australia, Middle East, Benelux and Switzerland, while the Polish, Turkish and Middle Eastern sales were handled by Nada Cirjanic.
Based on the award-winning debut novel by Joe Dunthorne, Submarine tells of one boy’s fight to save
his mother from the advances of a mystic and to simultaneously lure his eczema-strafed girlfriend into
the bedroom.
Submarine was adapted and directed by first-time director Richard Ayoade, and stars newcomers Craig
Roberts and Yasmin Paige, alongside Sally Hawkins, Paddy Considine and Noah Taylor. The project was produced by Andy Stebbing, Mary Burke and Mark Herbert at Warp Films, executive produced by Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films, and is backed by Film4, the UK Film Council’s New Cinema Fund, Wales Creative IP Fund and Film Agency Wales.
Optimum Releasing will open the film in the UK and Ireland in 2011.
