Directed by Sono Sion, the four-hour drama follows a young boy who falls in love with a girl who later becomes his step sister. He is then forced to rescue her, along with her mother and his own father, from a religious cult.
The cast is headed by Nishijima Takahiro, Mitsushima Hikari and Ando Sakura.
The film opened on one screen at the Eurospace Cinema in Tokyo on January 31 and has become that cinema's highest-grossing release ever, despite its long running time which has limited the number of screenings.
