Cinema have always made their money from soft drinks and popcorn, haven't they?

Arthouse cinemas used to be different (I think) - you weren't allowed to bring anything into the auditoria - but where I grew up (at venues like The Watershed, Arnolfini, Cornerhouse) the cinema had a thriving bar and restaurant; they were places to meet. This would appear to be a viable model.

However, there are dangers: the moment you start thinking about which films will draw an audience who will also eat at the restaurant, you are done as a curator.
