Working Title is to produce a film with Julia Roberts based on the life of African wildlife conservationist, Joan Root.
The film (as yet untitled) tells the story of wildlife conservationist Joan Root who was murdered in her Kenyan home in January of this year. Julia Roberts will play the role of Joan Root.
Inspired by a Vanity Fair article by Mark Seal entitled A Flowering Evil, the film will follow Joan's earlier life with husband Alan Root with whom she made pioneering and award-winning wildlife documentaries travelling the globe for more than twenty years.
After they divorced in 1981, Root returned to her beloved home on Lake Naivasha where she devoted herself to saving the lake from the ecologically damaging yet highly lucrative flower-farm industry which many believe was the path to her eventual murder.
David Magee (Finding Neverland), is writing the screenplay.
Working Title Films will produce the film in association with Julia Roberts' production company Red Om. The producers are Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Julia Roberts with Liza Chasin, Debra Hayward, Lisa Gillan and Phil Rose serving as executive producers. The film is planned to shoot on location in Africa next year.
