Screen International is hosting a For Your Consideration screening of Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s Flee on Monday, March 7.
The screening will be available for 24 hours from March 7, 15:00 UK time / 7:00 PT time.
Flee is a hand-drawn hybrid documentary story about a young refugee’s journey from Afghanistan to Denmark decades ago. The 36-year-old subject, Amin Nawabi (a pseudonym), is an old school friend of director Rasmussen and agrees to tell a personal story of persecution and escape on the condition that his identity would not be revealed.
The film received a Cannes 2020 label and was selected for Sundance’s World Cinema Documentary Competition, where it won the Grand Jury Prize, before going on to become a major force in the awards race.
It earned Oscar nominations for best animated feature, documentary feature and international feature – the first film ever to do so - as well as two Bafta nominations. It has already won prizes at Denmark’s Robert Awards, the BIFAs, the European Film Awards and the Gothams.
Neon released the film in the US on December 3, where it has passed $330,000 at the box office.
Flee was produced by Final Cut for Real, in co-production with Danish animation studio Sun Creature, France’s Vivement Lundi!, Sweden’s MostFilm and Norway’s Mer Film in coproduction with Arte France, Pictanovo Région Hauts de France, VPRO Netherlands, Copenhagen Film Fond. Associate producers include Vice Studios, Ryot Films and Ahmed’s Left Handed Films.
